Single-Ply Membranes TPO/PVC/Hypalon

Problem

Application Issues:

~ Seam integrity is directly related to improper installation.

~ Batten bars, fasteners and cover strips installed improperly can lead to sagging membrane, high spots and punctures.

Common Problems:

Plasticizer migration and UV-instability in thermoplastic roof materials result in hairline cracking, shrinking, chalking, embrittlement and break down of the membrane. As a result, the following problems occur:

Crazing: The development of a multitude of very fine cracks or pin-holing in the single-ply substrate, sometimes referred to as “scrum.”

Seam Failure: Occur as the material shrinks, becomes brittle and loses elasticity.

UV Weathering: The roof substrate breaks down from wind, rain and UV exposure, as well as expansion and contraction from changing temperatures.

Roof Ponding – Ponding areas are usually caused by raised batten bars and cover strips.

Solution

Why SRM over a Single-Ply Membranes TPO/PVC/Hypalon Roof?

SRM will restore and extend the life of the roof.

SRM protects the seams and substrate from the UV attack and weathering, eliminating the plasticizer migration and UV-instability issues.

SRM is liquid applied directly to the roof system, covering every hairline crack and patch with a silicone product designed specifically for that part of the roof.

SRM provides a monolithic roof membrane, eliminating all the seams, which eliminates and all the leaks!

SRM offers maintenance/repair products for all common problems of single-ply membranes.

SRM eliminates costly tear-offs and landfill waste.

SRM will withstand and stay adhered in the presence of ponding water.

WDG Products needed:

  • 601 Butter Grade to seal the seams, scrum, pin holes
  • WDG Polyester Fabric (if needed)
  • KGF 1000 to seal around drains or scuppers
  • HSS 535 Flashing Grade on walls, skylights, parapets, ect.
  • HSS 535 Coating on the roof

Always perform an adhesion test prior to application of WDG SRM. 211 Primer may be required.

How to apply SRM to a TPO/PVC/Hypalon Roof?

Power-wash/Clean Roof Substrate

Address details and required repairs (sealants/535 coatings/embedded fabric)

Apply single-coat application of HSS 535 Solvent-Free Silicone

Note: Always refer to WDG Specifications for application instructions. 211 Primer may be required.

Single-Ply Membranes
TPO/PVC/Hypalon

TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) and PVC (polyvinyl chloride) are single-ply thermoplastic roofing membranes. Single-ply roofing comes in large rolls and must be glued or mechanically fastened to a roof, and sealed at all seams. Single-ply roofs do not have the redundancy or durability of multi-ply roofs. Hypalon is a single-ply membrane manufactured as a thermoplastic, but cures over time and becomes a thermoset.
